IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Asterope Glass
Character journal: [personal profile] pleiade
Series name: N/A
Canon notes: Taken between cryogenic suspension and arrival at terraformed colony at Gliese 581c
Species: Human (genetically tweaked)
Age: Asterope is not sure of her exact age, due to not really having access to a calendar while in the facility where she was raised, but when she was rescued, she was assumed to be around sixteen, and her current paperwork says she's nineteen.

Arrival Condition: Groggy from cryogenic suspension, but otherwise peachy.

History: The year was 2073, when a laboratory in Greece began developing genetically enhanced children, in the hope of selling them as super-soldiers to other countries. Asterope was one of nearly a hundred children raised in sterile environments by a team of scientists, subject to constant assessment and training. Some of the potential super-soldiers (Asterope couldn't help but notice these were mostly the physically stronger ones, some of whom were bullies when the children were together) were quite successful, bought and taken from the facility before they were fourteen.

Asterope was not. A sensitive child, her abilities all tested well, but her sense of self was left damaged from the way she was raised. She was sixteen years old and still living at the facility when the US military sent a team to shut down the program. While the scientists who created her were punished, she was put into the foster system after being rescued. However, once she reached 18 and left the system, she didn't really have a solid plan for supporting herself. While she was able to find minimum wage jobs, she 'failed to thrive' in public environments.

However, with her keen mind for math, a co-worker suggested she might be able to draw up astrological charts as a side gig. She was able to build an online business, but it wasn't the most fulfilling of work, after everything she'd been through. After about a year, Asterope caught wind of a colony ship leaving earth for an exoplanet colonization project at Gliese 581c. The first waves of colonization had taken only the best and brightest, but those started in the 2040s, and by now the colonization projects really only had the requirement that one be able to explain how they'd be useful once they reached the planet to be colonized. Asterope offered her services in charting the stars above Gliese 581c, for use in navigation. She was accepted, all ready to go, put into cryogenic suspension for the journey...

...and woke up on Temba.

Personality: A lot of what's going on with Asterope now can be explained by her upbringing. She never had a proper childhood, nor really learned how to interact with other people in a normal manner. In fact, one could argue that she failed to truly develop a sense of self; the scientists who raised her made it clear she was eventually going to be put to use for one purpose or another, and she wasn't given much room to explore her own desires. She has that time now, but she's not used to long-term planning for her future. Instead, she tends to run on curiosity and whim, pursuing what interests her in the moment, particularly if it's a new experience. She's perhaps a little reckless with herself, not stopping to think of potential consequences her actions might have for her (while being more cautious where other people are involved).

Asterope knows she's different from other people, but she's not exactly proud of her origins. She tends to feel like she's on the outside of any group of people by default, like an observer of social systems as much as of stars. The fact that she never had any real friends growing up means that any she makes now might find her quietly desperate to be liked, while also not knowing the social customs that tend to come with friendship. With those who are older or who are perceived authority figures, she's sort of a houseplant: she blossoms with a little praise and wilts under criticism. She's used to being a failed experiment, so implications that she's not good enough hit her very hard.

One thing Asterope never really learned how to do is resolve interpersonal conflict. She's prone to going quiet or cowering, rather than standing up for herself. This goes back to her childhood experience with bullies, and got worse while in foster care, where being a weird kid who often had sensory overload didn't do her any favors. If you get to a point where she's willing to disagree with you, that's actually a sign of trust. She's only going to open up to that point to people who've pretty much proven they're not going to hurt her for speaking up.

Abilities:
- Enhanced senses: Asterope has senses that are stronger than human norms; she has better vision, as well as seeing into the infrared and ultraviolet ranges, stronger hearing with a wider range of pitches she can sense, and so one. However, this leaves her very vulnerable to being overwhelmed. Loud noises, bright colors, strong smells, crowds...all of these have the potential to be too much for her. This leads to her being more active at night, as she's pretty sensitive to sunlight (and also because most people are around being loud during the day).

- Math prodigy: Asterope can do calculations and problems in her head that others would need a computer for, able to find solutions quickly.

- Star nerd: While her basic knowledge comes from astrology, Asterope's got the basics of astronomy down as well. She was originally going to be making star charts for navigation for the Gliese 581c colony, after all.

Personal Item: A sketchbook with paper thick enough for watercolor painting.
